Problem

Problem

London Live’s production and control room needed to operate remotely during the pandemic to produce their daily news shows. In addition, they happened to be moving offices to reduce their footprint and improve their sustainability impact. The arrival of both challenges simultaneously provided a unique opportunity to rethink how they produced news. COVID came with little warning, meaning time was of the essence.

Solution

Solution

London Live engaged Support Partners to deploy a fully Microsoft Azure native solution allowing London Live to capture, produce, and deliver news from anywhere. Microsoft Azure represented a logical choice given their use of the Microsoft Office platform and the pre-integrated capabilities of the full Microsoft Cloud, reducing the project's delivery time. Support Partners professional services identified and designed a virtual workspace where the creative team members could access the latest hardware and software components to complete their news workflows.

The virtual workspace was then implemented, deployed, and managed as a service, providing a diverse set of users with the systems they need to work. Editors, producers, journalists, and technical directors all have the virtual workspaces they need and shared areas in which to collaborate utilizing Microsoft’s Office, Azure, and Support Partners’ AIR Workspaces. New environments can be requested, approved, and provisioned quickly while existing environments are cost-optimized using AIR Workspaces pause and destroy features.

Business Benefit

Business Benefit

By moving to virtual workspaces, London Live reduced its production team by ½ while producing double the amount of content. The streamlining of workflows leading to improved team productivity was critical. Further, they reduced the data center space by 75%, resulting in substantial savings in electrical, floor space, HVAC, and IT personnel. In addition, the remote workforce is now working mainly from home, reducing the number of daily commutes by 40K per year, which in turn is reducing their CO₂ emission footprint.

The move of London Live news production to Azure has, in this challenging time, been seamless and highly beneficial for our output. The ability to produce news from anywhere while using the same tools as in the office has enabled us to not miss a beat in delivering to our London audience. The impact on our budgets, productivity, and sustainability goals has been nothing short of phenomenal. There is no going back now, and we continue to build on this even as we return to the office. This is our new normal.
