Problem

Problem

Our client’s news organization is responsible for informing the public of critical news and delivering this promptly to the audience’s platform of choice. Their field contribution teams are responsible for collecting content from the scene of breaking stories and delivering it to the editorial staff for inclusion in upcoming VOD or linear distributions. To manage this media, the organization utilized a media asset management system, which operated successfully for them for a long time, but audience requirements had changed. Audiences wanted the content faster and in varying digital and linear forms they desired, which stressed the existing infrastructure and workflows.

The latency between the field acquisition and editorial processing of this content was 10s of minutes, which was previously considered acceptable but was now getting in the way of meeting their audience expectations.  To meet this need, the editorial staff began using content from 3rd party social media sources instead of their content due to the shorter processing latency. As their dependency on social media sources grew, their broadcast content lost uniqueness, and biased viewpoints entered their newscasts.  Their reputation as a trusted news supplier took a hit, forcing them to reevaluate their field contribution workflows.

Solution

Solution

The Broadcaster chose Support Partners’ professional services to help them evaluate their workflows and design a solution to simplify and speed up the field contribution process. Support Partners designed and implemented an AI-based acquisition workflow and a Team’s application based on Microsoft’s Cloud. As content enters the newsroom, AI enriches it with tags describing the content. People, places, and things are identified down to the sub-clip within the video, which remains managed by the existing media asset management system. Editorial staff had long used Microsoft Teams for collaboration but did not conduct their rich media editorial duties within the application. Using a Support Partners’ Team’s application, the editorial staff subscribed to topics of interest to them. The Team’s application utilized AI-enriched tags to identify newly arrived content from the field. It pushed it directly to the editorial staff, matching their subscription preferences with specific media sub-clips. They no longer needed to perform searches on the media asset management system and weed through endless footage to find the content of interest. Instead, AI and the application delivered the media and media sub-clips directly to them using Microsoft Teams, an application they are familiar with and like.

This solution reduced the editorial process for this content from tens of minutes to minutes, enabling them to meet their audience’s expectations while utilizing their content. Third-party sources in the broadcast were reduced, and their brand’s unique qualities of original, unbiased, and trusted news programming were restored. The editorial staff adopted the solution quickly since it utilized Microsoft Teams, a collaboration platform familiar to all their users. It simplified the number of applications needed to perform their work.
